Financial Capability - A Big Lottery Fund Project

Big Lottery Fund

Long Term Strategy

The focus of the Financial Capability project is to ensure that financial literacy is consistently delivered inside Burton on Trent long after the project ends. It is hoped that this will be achieved through close work with agencies in the Burton on Trent area. Primarily contact with other agencies has been made through the development of a consortium that aimed to encourage partnership working. The consortium has been highly successful and as such strong links have been made with numerous agencies within Burton on Trent all of whom are fully committed to financial literacy. A regional consortium has also been set up and a number of agencies have been encouraged to attend these meetings to share ideas and information on financial capability.

Training

The long term aim of the project has in part been realised through the training of partner agencies’ staff. The training has been focused on spotting financial literacy needs and offering support to service users. It is hoped that through this training, partner agencies can identify client’s needs and will be able to coach their users in the more minor financial literacy issues and as such continue the project without the reliance being solely on the Bureau. The project has, since September 2006, trained a variety of agency user groups and school sixth forms, this training continues on both a regular and request based service.

This is a highly ambitious project and the effort and commitment shown by both the Bureau and partner organisations have been rewarded by numerous successes, detailed further in the annual reports. It is hoped long term that the project will benefit Burton on Trent as a whole and will ultimately affect the amount on debt clients seen in the Bureau.
